What Happened?

Since 2004, over 1 million patients have been implanted with inferior vena cava (IVC) filters to help reduce the likelihood of injury or death due to a pulmonary embolism.  Medical device manufacturers like C.R. Bard and Cook Medical claim that many of their IVC filters are optionally retrievable and the FDA recommends that the device usually be removed from the patient within a few months.* However, research indicates that the majority of these "retrievable" IVC filters are not removed from patients and have remained implanted in patients far beyond the recommended length of time.

Studies have shown these possible complications linked to IVC filters:

  • Increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Filter migrates to another area of the body
  • Fracture of the filter and broken parts migrate to the heart or lungs
  • Filter or parts perforating the inferior vena cava or other organs
  • Filter tilts inside the inferior vena cava

If you or a loved one currently has an IVC filter, you may be eligible for compensation.
